Summary

It is in the Foundation's interest to see that citizendium.org, wikihow.com, and freebase.com continue as viable concerns for as long as possible.

Proposal

Therefore, as a gesture of goodwill and hope for the accidents of the future, the Foundation should offer, ask permission, and if allowed, host a full mirror of Citizendium, WikiHow, and FreeBase.

Motivation

Avoiding a software monoculture has been identified as a top information security threat. Providing the means of avoiding that threat can be accomplished at the same time as providing live fail-over backups for related projects. Perhaps they can do the same for us, but that shouldn't matter. The Foundation is not threatened, but strengthened by these alternative editorial models.

Key Questions

Will they let us back up their entire published content? If not, will they let us back up enough such that failover to the Foundation backup is a reasonable consideration for them?

How much extra disk space and computing equipment will this require?

Is this an appropriate National Science Foundation grant for funding this project?

Is the non-commercial license of WikiHow (CC-by-nc-sa 2.5) compatible with Wikimedia's standards for free content? (Citizendium uses CC-by-sa-3.0; FreeBase uses CC-by-2.5.)

Potential Costs

A few racks in a datacenter and a maybe a 1/4-time sysadmin headcount for each project mirrored.
