Summary

To overcome the current editor-driven content and layout that has evolved without constraint, my proposal is that panels of readers should be formed to ensure that we provide those publications that our readers require in a way that they find accessible.

Proposal

Panels of readers should be formed and invited to specify or recommend:

- what topics should be included

- the optimum level of detail that should be included

- the nature of illustrations, maps, graphs and other visual aids

- appropriate levels of internal and external linking

- the use of techniques such as categorisation, lists, time-lines, charts and the like to simplify access to information

- the "look and feel" of our publications

in a consistent, holistic and accessible manner.

Motivation

1. To generate and inject an external set of inputs into the projects.

2. To provide guidance on where our projects should be heading and to provide warnings should they become stale, inaccurate or inaccessible.

Key Questions

How many panels? How big? Who to invite? How to invite? Any remuneration? Experts and/or lay panel members?

Above all, how should the panels communicate with the editors and how will the editors respond to the panels?

  • Aren't our editors also readers?

Potential Costs

No idea, but probably low as a proportion of the total cost of our work.Saga City 09:22, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
