Proposal talk:WikiGIS -- Setup a GeoServer to Share Georeferenced Data

What for

I must say that at first I find the proposal interesting (I work with Postgis/GeoServer), but then what kind of information would be there stored? How would be it edited?

The uses I can think of are covered by the OpenStreetMaps integration that has been already proposed, so I would like to know in which way you see this implementation expanding the posibilities. A copuple of user-cases would be great. Thanks, --MarianoC 21:47, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I really appreciate your feedback, Mario. I've posted a few use cases and key questions to this effect. Please keep the feedback coming. I will have to go find the OSM proposal and cross-reference it. -- User:ChristineBush 19:52, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Geo related data is a very large category of data. The varieties of data that you suggest and uses for this "GeoServer" are broad. The structure and format of the hardware requirements is quite different than the existing needs of the text based wiki format. For instance, one use could be digital pictures of a location as it changes over time. Each individual picture is relatively small. But the collection for the one location grows larger over time. However, your proposal opens the door for any and every location to record and store pictures here. Suddenly, we are flikr or potentially overwhelmed by the volumes of data that could come from any one particular data store. Another instance could see topography stored here. What scales are acceptable? It is one thing to think of scales for the world similar to 1:100,000. However, what if people want to store their LIDAR clouds here. That too is topography - very large detailed topography. The scale of your proposal is vague and should be better defined to address this sort of issue. That said, I agree with and would support a more defined proposal. Thanks, CommunityGIS 14:06, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Here are the links to existing systems: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/OpenStreetMap (old overview) and https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/OpenStreetMap . A geoserver should no problem there, so please come and experiment there. --Kolossos 06:06, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
