Should I send it to you? How?

Sorry. The article is about a monstrous bus accident where 24 people died in Panama last thursday night, or that's how it started, but it seems to have a mind of its own not to stop there and goes on to comment on some of the social and political settings that explain why the response from the panamanian people is more one of anger than of shock and sorrow. It then convinces me that none of it makes any sense without the historical background. I clear see it's groing like a cancer and needs some dramatic surgery, but I can't bring myself to do it, I just love to see how it grows on me. Now, I am working from pretty remote location, using a laptop and a sattelite conexion which is not exactely stable, so I am ready to send you the article as is, see what you can make with it; only of course by now it may not be news anylonger. Really, I don't care so much about that; nothing I write or is published is going to revive those people. But I am curious to see what you think. Saludos, Thamus 21:17, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Got it, but...

Got it, this a wiki, iniciative is welcome etc. In fact I have been leaving coments to that effect allready (crosslinking similar proposals) but it's a huge task! so I wanted to encourage other people to do the same, or maybe even come up with a bot or some clever mechanism to speed that process up. It could always be used again in five years... I imagine you have more than enough work yourself, but I also imagine you might have a little recruiting power if you set your mind to it. ; ) --Thamus 17:41, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

+sysop

Good timing, I was just thinking about adding a couple more sysops. I'll do it momentarily. As a general rule, assume extreme good faith, and don't delete pages unless they are clearly vandalism. I know we've got a ton of one-line proposals; I'd like to leave them in hopes that someone picks them up and adds to them. Have no mercy on spammers, and do your very best to ensure that this wiki is friendly, a safe place to promote ideas, and constructive. I'll send you an email with my contact info; if in doubt - contact me. Thanks for volunteering.  :) -- Philippe 01:10, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

unblock

My preference would be to not include an unblock option on the block template. If you'd like, they can use the "email this user" feature from my user page, but I believe the unblock template encourages wikilawyering and bureaucracy that I'd prefer to ignore. We only do blocks for very clear, egregious offenses, generally. -- Philippe 02:50, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I think there's danger in over-formalizing things. Refer them to my email (Special:EmailUser/Philippe) if they wish to dispute, but it's very clear that this wiki is managed by the Foundation - while in massive deference to the will of the community. -- Philippe 02:55, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think that's exactly correct, and I also don't feel the need to leave blocked templates for spammers. There's no sense making this into some sort of bureaucracy - let's just run a wiki.  :) -- Philippe 03:09, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for welcome

Thanks Gopher for your welcome. I presume, I'll visit this project pretty unfrequently. Nevertheless, after a long list of bot fights against the wiki markup, my dream is a wiki well formed markup... you can imagine, I presume, how much difficult have been to write a python script to convert apostrophes into the right caracter, searching them into a mess of Bold text and Italic text markup tags, into the endless variety of it.wikisorce texts... ;-) and it's only one of possible examples. Well, food for brain and neurons at least. :-) --Alex brollo 14:15, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Spam blacklist

Thanks for fixing my stupid mistakes. There's another small problem though: the diff links in the log do not seem to work (they point to Meta). Do you think you could fix that too? Regards, Wutsje 14:26, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the welcome

Thanks for welcoming me into the fold. I'm aiming to make some constructive proposals, but failing that, I'll be hanging around and categorising and critiquing stuff. — Sasuke Sarutobi 00:19, 30 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Painless Translation Interface

Hi Gopher! I am glad to have a pretext to talk to you again. I have noticed your interest in a problem about which I have been thinking. Here is an excerpt of a conversation of mine with Rursus:

when you log into your editor/translator account, some features become visible that are not visible to the regular user. Like, somewhere at the top of the article page, you can at a glance know into which languages it's been translated, what is the status of the translation (done/in progress/revision wanted...). Then, you can click on the >translate< button, and your window splits in two, the article on the left half, the right half blank for you to type in, and a little corner somewhere at the top with the relevant dictionaries.

I wanted to interest him in teaching me whatever programming lingo I need to learn in order to make that functional, although of course it would be a lot faster if he developed the code himself  ;) .But what you suggest at the village pump is very much this, is it not? so I wanted to say that yesterday is not too soon to have it. It is a real necessity. As I told you already, I have some experience as a translator and false modesties apart, I believe I can do a pretty good job (bar limitations you know of). But things as they are now in wp are extremely off-putting for a new user. When you ask for help, people are well meaning, but they come up with jargon a new user shouldn't be expected to understand, like interwikilinks and such, and even some pages that are supposed to guide you seem to be written only for the ones who already know everything! ooof, sorry, needed a sympathetic hear to get that out of my chest. My positive imput, expanded:

after logging in as a translator, you get to see a translator toolbar at the top of every page. It contains:

1.search box - you type the two characters that identify language (pt, en, fr...) and you are informed wether the page (article, document, talk...)
a)is already translated to that language,
b)requires collaboration-proofreading,
c)is being translated,
d)has a different but equivalent page (translation not necessary/partially necessary) or
e)it is not yet translated. For every output except c) and e) a link is given.
2.translate button - As above, screen splits (I'd say two vertical halves, but horizontal is fine too). Forget about the dicionaries, though. One can look for them online.

In translate mode:

3.List of wiki translators using that specific language pair, with a green button if they are online and choose to be available. Upon clicking on a name, a
4.Chat box is made available.
5.Save translation button - New article is automatically created on its proper wiki.

Now, I don't know wikimarkup or html, but I understand programming enough to know that all this features are eminently feasible. Can you weigh in on this? Best, -- Thamus joyfulnoise 06:44, 6 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I just reminded me of an important feature I overlooked above: a list of all, or most important pages related to translation issues, (guidelines, policies, tutorials, the translators village pump or how it's called...)

In this page http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translations/links/pt you will find a translation that are being requested since 2007! Unless something is escaping my attention. Do we need a taskforce? does it exist?

Thanks!

Gopher, just wanted to drop you a note and thank you for your hard work. You're doing a bang-up job. -- Philippe 16:13, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for welcome

Gopher, like to remind you that i have just updated Call for participation/Appeal letter/hi, so please update the main post (letter). -- Charu 14:28, 26 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Answered

Hi Gopher - I answered your question on my talk page. Also, I totally support you in this action. I'm probably in a COI position with that one because of my role on the election committee, but personally believe your action there is entirely correct. That's a good faith proposal and should be treated as such. -- Philippe 00:36, 9 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Next steps (again)

Hi Gopher,

Thanks for all of your contributions to the strategy wiki to date! The strategic planning process wouldn't be where it is today without all of your help. Your early and frequent support was invaluable, and I want you to know how much of a difference that you made. I hope you'll continue to work towards finishing the plan...

We're about to move into the third and final phase of the process, and in many ways, this will be the most challenging. I'm hoping you will continue to be an active presence in shaping the movement's five year strategic plan.

Here are some concrete suggestions as to how you can help moving forward:

  • Add your name to Strategic Planning:Hosts. This just formalizes what I think has been true all along; that you care about this process, and that you're doing what you can to help it along moving forward.
  • Help organize and improve this wiki! Starting next week (January 18, 2010), we're going to be encouraging many more people to come participate, and we want to make sure this wiki is as presentable as possible. A comprehensive list of things to do is at Strategic Planning:To-do list.
  • Invite people to participate! Encourage volunteers to discuss Task force/Recommendations.
  • Finally, we need to clearly describe what this final phase is going to look like. In particular, we could use feedback and discussion on Strategic Planning:Decision-Making.

Let me know what you think! Many, many thanks! ~Philippe 00:42, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Content scope

Hi Gopher65!

As you took part in the discussion in the "Extending content"-thread on the strategy task force talk page that initiate the content scope task force, I hope you will join the continued discussion on the content scope task force talk page.

Thanks

Hi Gopher65 -

Thanks for the welcome. I've come to spread my idea(s): http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Improving_Technical_Topics_At_Wikiversity !

I've had trouble over the last few weeks getting non "content experts" people to express any interest. If you have any thoughts on how to gather troops, I'm all ears! I've posted in the education and psychology talk pages but have received no replies :(

He!

Thanks for welcoming me! I don't, unfortunately, have any plans to contribute to this wiki. I just happened to see the Call for action and wrote a Dutch translation of it, which took me a few minutes. I hope someone will proofread it soon! Cheers, Face 16:17, 3 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Welcome

It is nice to be welcomed. Equally, not nice to be advised what to read here.--Remind me never 14:41, 5 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dude

I have no idea what you are talking about. Perhaps you could clarify what you meant by "spam"? I have a history of [good contributions on other Wikimedia wikis] so I don't think that I would tarnish that by spamming any of them. And could you disable liquidthreads on my talkpage? It's really annoying. Thanks, TeleComNasSprVen 05:31, 26 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
