Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organization that acts to change attitudes and behavior, to protect and conserve the environment, and to promote peace. It was founded in 1971.
Organizational Structure
- International Board of Directors
- Approve annual budget for Greenpeace International
- Appoint and supervise Executive Director
- Monitor operations and activities, including approving new campaigns
- Greenpeace International
- Develops and coordinates global strategies and campaigns
- Monitors the development and performance of national and regional offices
- Provides services to national and regional offices
- Monitors global strategic and financial performance
- Develops Greenpeace presence in priority regions for the organization
- Maintains contact with developers and supporters in countries without offices
- 28 national and regional offices (providing a presence in 40 countries)
- Largely autonomous in carrying out jointly agreed global campaign strategies in a local context
Governance Structure
- Global governance structure reflects need to maintain a high level of internationalism and coordination
- Governance structure is lead out in clear policies and procedures agreed to by representatives from the national and regional offices
- Annual General Meeting serves a supervisory body for the organization as a whole
- Each national and regional office appoints a trustee
Financial
- Relies on contributions from individual supports and foundation grants
