Summary

Wikibooks and WikiSource turn away many projects a month, because they do not fit the community standards. Many of these projects would be valid information, or interesting artistic works, but because of the concentration at these projects on Textbooks they cannot be published on a WikiMedia site. Pedia publishing is oriented around publishing all of its books with a common cover, and ignoring authorship on the binding/cover. The original work limitation means that not even compendiums and seminars can get produced via this mechanism. In essence perhaps 80 percent of the market for editing/production of books, is eliminated. If you want to attract new editors, it might be a good idea to have a broader interface to the book market.

Proposal

Consider starting new wiki projects to approach other collaborative market segments in books

Motivation

Increasing number of types of books that can be created Increasing number of Editors within the Wikimedia Community Increasing market share by promoting a wider range of projects

Key Questions

  • Do we want to increase the number of Editors, or the Quality of the 99% who only occassionally edit?
  • Is there Legal reasons not to approach specific markets?
  • Would opening new projects increase the load on servers/size of staff/demand for top level volunteers and interfere with existing services?

Potential Costs

Server/Volunteer time, promotion, set-up costs
