Summary
Encourage the usage of Wikipedia (or an offshoot specifically for this purpose) to schools and combat the current views of unreliability.
Proposal
Strongly incorporating the idea of peer-review by academic institutions, Wikipedia could have some way of marking articles that were checked by authoritative experts for correctness and also by respected style editors for readability/usability. These articles would also filter up into a different site which holds all the well-checked articles (could be called "EduWiki" or something like that) which is a citeable source for school assignments. There might also be an emphasis on articles of academic interest (history, mathematics, science, literature, etc.) rather than well-checked articles about celebrities.
Done - see schools-wikipedia.org.
Motivation
Not being able to use Wikipedia as a citeable source on school assignments.
Key Questions
- How to establish a reliable network of people/institutions for checking articles?
- How to generate a public image that will make teachers willing to accept EduWiki as a citeable resource?
- What would be the relationship between articles on Wikipedia and EduWiki?
- Which articles should and should not be included in EduWiki?
Potential Costs
Publicity to emphasize that the articles are well-checked and reliable.
