Summary
The most important reason for readers not to become contributors, is that they don't think they could bring in a valuable contribution (http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WMFSurvey3.png). Here is a proposal to tackle this issue.
Proposal
The reason why in more than 50% of the cases, the reason why readers do not contribute, is most certainly because they do not have specific knowledge to share - which correlates with the under-representation among contributors of people deprived of higher education. Now there are many many ways to contribute to the Wikimedia projects, other than contributing to the writing of an article, but this is not made clear enough. It would hence be necessary to think about highlighting these possibilities, so that people do realize that the only way to contribute is not by clicking on the "edit" button.
