Proposal:Include competitive approaches to creating content
Many of our projects could do with an infusion of activity. Their projects are too small, there is too few people to do the chores. By bringing more of a challenge to people we can make it more exciting for people to contribute.
Consider what game theory brings to stimulate participation. Consider the games created to stimulate people participating in dull stuff like the categorisation of pictures... When we bring statistics to our community that have a practical impact like "most wanted articles, we can follow these up with attributable reads. When these are for people who start new articles through such a project, you stimulate people who choose this numbers game. When we include trust by using colours to rate the performance of an author, we can colour the author using the "average" colour of his contributions.
We improve our usability, our localisation and we can make it more attractice to participate in our projects. The one challenge we face is how to improve our least moving projects, jazzing up the editor experience would help a lot.
Will this gaming approach have a positive benefit. Are we willing to invest in these approaches. The investment is in running the queries, writing or more likely evaluating the software. Allowing small projects to have it where others like the English are likely to argue for a year and a half.
More of a risk. When we introduce gaming, the game is likely to be gamed. However, when you look at the Volapuk experience, it shows that their gaming of the numbers game led to an increased traffic size. Then again, we game them back by asking the people for an "appreciation".
As with the Wiki Cup on EN:Wikipedia precautions are needed to prevent participants gaming the system by gently reviewing each others articles, especially in single reviewer processes such as for good articles.
Assuming the system awards fewer points for minor edits, it will also require some form of active judging to give guidance to participants who are strangers to the minor edit flag. WereSpielChequers 15:43, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
