If not English, in what language is this proposal submitted?:
Summary
In English-speaking (and other "larger" languages) countries, nearly every internet user has heard of Wikipedia. In my experience in Norway, a majority of adults including teachers have not heard of it.
Proposal
- One suggestion: An international poll about knowledge of, and use of, Wikipedia. Perhaps sponsored by a news corporation?
- Many edits on the English wikipedia and probably some others are made from computers in countries where most people speak another language. Why not thank such editors with a little note saying "thanks for that information, would you also like to add it to the Somali/Norwegian/Hindi pedia?
- Other ideas?
Motivation
Familiarity in the population ==> editor recruitment ==> larger and better encyclopedia ==> more familiarity
Key Questions
Potential Costs
We already have the software to do "geonotices", a targeted banner to people whose computers are in particular parts of the world. So costs to use it to tell Tanzanian editors that we have a swahili pedia should be trivial.
