Ogg is already supported: give a look at http://blog.wikimedia.org/?s=theora . mp4 and others are not free formats so are unusable, but they're developing features to transcode them (firefogg, Wiki@home etc.). Nemo 11:13, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Personal Video Uploads
There are many places to upload videos on the internet for personal use. I'm afraid, given the space and bandwidth they take up, wikimedia might not be the best place. I encourage you to try out ourmedia.org and archive.org for free, customizable, high-quality alternatives. You can even turn off comments there. --Lyc. cooperi 08:42, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Impact?
Some proposals will have massive impact on end-users, including non-editors. Some will have minimal impact. What will be the impact of this proposal on our end-users? -- Philippe 00:06, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure about this one. The other proposals I've reviewed (java and flash animations proposals, which require programming skills to create and edit, browser plugins to view and considerable CPU and bandwidth resources to play) are clear outright detrimental. "just" pure video (or audio) is however a different ballpark.
- the risk that the video (or audio) will, instead of complementing the text will instead replace it, is still there.
- the bandwidth requirements and CPU requirements are orders of magnitude larger than those required for images.
- images are already a considerable resource problem for those making backups of wikipedia.
overall, then, i'd say that the implementation of this proposal would be detrimental to wikipedia's aims, and that, instead of allowing wikipedia to store videos, external links should be an adequate substitute, forcing writers to make pages that stand on their own without assuming access to video resources. - Wikipedia has long had the ability to store and display video (and audio) and there are hundreds of thousands of these multimedia files already. As far as I can tell this proposal is just suggesting making the uploading process easier by supporting the automatic conversion of formats as other sites supporting video have. Support for doing that has been a work in progress for a long time, it's been the subject of a failed google SoC project or two as well. --Gmaxwell 14:31, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
