Proposal talk:Build WikiProject tools into MediaWiki

Not really standardized

Two remarks: First, the WikiProject structures are not really standardized - they are at best (somewhat) similarized on en.wiki, but a comparison with de.wiki, for example, shows that structures there are entirely different. Second, it would already be useful to have a standardized technical description for Wikiprojects for use by external software (not necessarily MediaWiki) - e.g., a centralized directory of project and subprojects, associated banners and categories, etc. But experience on en.wiki shows that not even for this minimal goal consensus can be found. --B. Too Wikipedia centric?

I think this idea would be fine as an extension that could be used on the Wikimedia wiki's, but how would it help all of the other Mediawiki wiki's? If it is built-in to the code, wouldn't it be pretty much useless for me if I used Mediawiki to set up a personal wiki? 84.66.25.206 23:57, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Removing merge tag

I'm removing the merge tag. This proposal is much more specific than Proposal:Stop using wikis for tasks for which wikis are not suitable, it doesn't make much sense to merge it, in my opinion. --92.26.237.71 22:01, 30 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Expansion

I have expanded the proposal a bit, and made it less dependent on the English wikipedia. Comments welcome. --B. Wolterding 23:21, 30 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Impact?

Some proposals will have massive impact on end-users, including non-editors. Some will have minimal impact. What will be the impact of this proposal on our end-users? -- Philippe 00:06, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

The primary impact of this proposal will be on editors, specifically those working in project groups. (On some projects, like en.wikipedia, it seems that this affects the majority of editors.) These end-users will be equipped with better tools for organizing their project work, and they will hence save time which they can invest in editing articles. Impact on non-editors will be secondary. --B. Wolterding 10:13, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Interested

I've skimmed through this proposal, and as a pretty engaged participant/convener in a WikiProject, I'm intrigued. It seems to roughly parallel some thoughts I've had over the years. For now, just want to express my interest -- I'm just getting started with Strategy Wiki and I'll be poking around a bit before forming any opinions :) -Peteforsyth 04:06, 13 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
