Proposal talk:Canadian English Wikipedia
Being a Canadian, I would say that the Canadian online community is too small to support such an effort. I mean, look at how many of the smaller wikis have died a slow death. 5 or 10 million people just aren't enough to support a wiki. Look at those smaller wikis. Yes, some of them have an impressive number of articles, but even the Polish wikis have short, useless articles for the most part. Heck, even English Wikipedia doesn't have enough contributors to completely flush it out, and people want to try with a far smaller community? It just isn't believable that an acceptable number of decent articles would be created. Gopher65talk 03:47, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
This makes no sense, as I said on the discussion page for the American English wikipedia, I don't see why one would want to create a different wikipedia if there aren't any significant language differences ... AdrienE 16:08, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- Comment: Having a Wikipedia that includes all English dialects should not victimise certain ones, such as Canadian English. I am British, and while I feel sometimes ticked off at the American Eng preference (especially for things such as the date), I don't think that devolution would lead to better content. 92.22.92.88 16:11, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't think we need this that much. American English wikipedia is good enough for me, and I'm Canadian. --MisterLambda's IP address, 156.34.71.230 10:49, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
Language Converter
Is it ok to add language converter (which works on zhwiki currently) to enwiki? --Liangent 11:10, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I think so... Please, take a look at the talk about a Language conversion system mentioned on wikitech list. The use of that system is more acceptable than the creation of a new wiki just because of variants of some language... And the system should be useful for other languages as well... 143.107.45.43 12:13, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Request for new language
For those in support, please have a look at m:requests for new languages, for current policy, produre, and organization of processing new requests for new languages. Dedalus 13:55, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- This would be auto-rejected by the language committee due to the fact that it does not have a separate ISO-639 code. So this is a fairly pointless discussion, since it simply won't happen, regardless of what was decided here. Gopher65talk 16:14, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- You're putting the rule before the idea. This Canadian is against the proposal. Nevertheless, strategic consideration requires an idea to be discussed on its own merits. If it proves good enough, only then do we consider the impact of the rules, and, if need be, ways to get around those rules. Eclecticology 08:20, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
No need
As a Canadian, I can read the normal English Wikipedia just fine. In Canada, we are exposed to the British and American orthographies enough to be familiar with both. I just don't see the need. Internoob 18:39, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
Better ways to spend one's time
This is a wasteful and divisive idea. Trying to define Canadian English would soon descend into nitpickery with no benefit at all. Without a strong Wikimedia Canada and people willing to accept responsibility for its development and maintenance, this idea is going nowhere. Eclecticology 08:20, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Impact?
Some proposals will have massive impact on end-users, including non-editors. Some will have minimal impact. What will be the impact of this proposal on our end-users? -- Philippe 00:06, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
