Impact?

Some proposals will have massive impact on end-users, including non-editors. Some will have minimal impact. What will be the impact of this proposal on our end-users? -- Philippe 01:10, 4 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

This proposal will have minimal impact on the end users. Its a proposal to augment and make wikipedia much much more social and interactive and the type of audience will increase to outside of the wikipedia sphere. Non editors and editors alike will be able to tag data and pages to references in wall posts... Pictures linking to geographic regions. It wont end up messing with any of what current end-users do.... Josemanimala 11:16, 9 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Support for Facebook

I have no idea what Opensocial can do, but I too would like to see at leaset Facebook integration. The edits are stalling (at least on English Wikipedia), so I think a little promotion outside the project would be helpful. I think social networks have the best "value for developer money" where you can create interactive apps with huge impact with relativelly little money. I am wondering how official iPhone app can be already coded reaching some 10M+ iPhone users (or x0M+?) while an app for 300M+ users on Facebook still dont exist. This would greatly promote Wikimedia projects.

I can think of severall Facebook apps or one app with following features:

  • sharing latest editor activity
  • sharing various "article of the day", "picture of the day" featured media
  • upload history for Commons

I have no idea whether Facebook app can be open source, but it would be nice.--Kozuch 11:05, 6 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is an intrinsic problem being that facebook apps(Externally running on iPhones etc) need to have an api key to be able to make calls to the facebook api system, this is directly linked to the user and that will be a problem since opensource projects do not ship with a key attached to a "USER" and we are not supposed to integrate the keys into the source code which is a violation of GPL in general. Well, open source is nice, but closed source is software too.--Kozuch 14:58, 9 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Open Source is fully enough for secure authentication as long as there is a signature file that can be generated in place and uploaded to the Facebook rather than downloaded from there. All these keys are not required by design. They requirement is the management decision and the decision may change if Wikipedia would start talking with Facebook seriously. If not, maybe some other FOSS based Facebook alternative can be integrated instead. Audriusa 18:37, 27 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
What I am trying to say is that there is an exposed API which we can use to integrate with Facebook. It will have very little impact and on facebook's side all that will be needed is a widget that integrates with wikipedia. Josemanimala 13:07, 29 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
