Proposal talk:German Wikipedia respecting the rules of civil communication

Latest comment: 14 years ago by WereSpielChequers in topic Refer to DE wiki?

I would altogether deny that "the navigation Software" of the present German Wikipedia uses a partly infantile and partly rude way. Examples? While I'm not even sure what the proponent is aiming at, I can only say that de WP is doing a good job in finding a neutral language style that does not offend anyone (outside of the actual namespace, but of course moreso in the actual namespace). Of course user contributions on disc pages and the like are a different story, but rude writing/behaviour is penalised rather strongly IMO. I also doubt this would have much of an impact either way, since most users and contributors don't get that deep into the internals anyway (without learning and accepting that users behave differently and learn to deal with it).(unsigned comment by 92.202.33.185)

I agree. Also I cannot see a concrete proposal. Seems like the user wants to change the way people communicate, but there are no ideas how to do this. Regards, --ChrisiPK 00:37, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I also agree, but the proposal is to tell them to calm down on the Teutonic attitude. I have personally had edits deleted there with caustic/sarcastic comments added about my supposed intelligence.--Andreasegde 20:31, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Most Users tend to be civilised, but friendliness is a minor problem. However it has happed many times, that administrators call Users "Assholes" and similar things. Thats a mayor problem. --90.146.217.210 08:50, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

This may be the case or not, but it is still nowhere near "navigation Software". Maybe the proponent is aiming at the old Du vrs. Sie debate? In any case, this proposal is useless as is. --92.202.52.209 13:08, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please clarify

Do you mean that you don't like the fact that

  • the MediaWiki software
  • the contributing people

use the informal "du", whereas you personally would prefer the formal "Sie"? Or is it about the harsh communication style in general? --Wutzofant 15:28, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Maybe the complaint is just about use of the informal "Du" opposed to the polite form "Sie", like "Wo möchtest du Wikimedia in 5 Jahren sehen?" Feels just like visiting Ikea, and it is sometimes irritating indeed. But not enough to make a formal complaint, and using the polite "Sie" might discourage younger people from submitting valuable content. And nobody will be hurt beeing subjected to "Du", even if you are beyond 40 already. 93.129.74.241 08:40, 24 August 2009 (UTC) [[User:Stenzel|Stenzel]Reply

Impact?

Some proposals will have massive impact on end-users, including non-editors. Some will have minimal impact. What will be the impact of this proposal on our end-users? -- Philippe 00:10, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Refer to DE wiki?

If this is specific to the German Wikipedia then I would suggest we refer it to them. If as is possibly more likely this is a general issue of formal or informal German then I would suggest we refer it to the German, Swiss and Austrian chapters. As the author notes there are many languages that have formal and informal styles, but which we should use and when should surely be a matter for the relevant chapter or project. I don't see how non-native speakers of a language can decide such things. WereSpielChequers 15:48, 16 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
