Proposal talk:I want to see Wikipedia win the Nobel Prize

Why would Wikipedia winning the Nobel prize be desirable? What steps could be taken to achieve this outcome? How can we overcome the fact that the prizes are awarded to people and not projects? --Gmaxwell 22:46, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

I don't think an organization can win the Nobel prize, however, having a Nobel prize winner say "I've learned everything I know from wikipedia" would be great, but there's nothing we can to about it and the project hasn't been around for long enough anyway. AdrienE 23:05, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

As a side note for AdrienE, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Grameen Bank, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations, Médecins Sans Frontières, just to name a few, are all examples of organizations winning the Nobel Peace Prize. But the Wikimedia Foundation should prove that it has really contributed to the advancement of humanity to have a chance in winning the Nobel Prize. 212.98.136.42 12:30, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

If there would be a nobel-prize for economy - not only economics -, google could definitely win it... Seriously, revealing the ultrastructure of a molecule, e.g. the DNA, or advancing particle physics are honored with a Nobel Prize, so why not to assign one for the contribution to human education, wich is in every case an advancement for humanity... at least from my point of view... --Custodes23 13:13, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh, organizations can win the nobel prize like for example UNFOR. Wikipedia is the perfect candidate for the peace price, better than any other that I know of. ;^) Rursus 18:13, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

It's a lovely idea and I'm sure many Wikipedians would feel very proud were this to happen. But I don't think this can be described as a strategy, it's just something that may happily arise out of the work in another ten or twenty years time. I'd like to point out that the site notice asked "Where do you want Wikimedia to be", or some such thing - it never specifically asked for a strategic vision. This is a dream, and I support dreaming. :) -- Philippe 18:14, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
